The Beatles have won best rock performance for their last song ‘Now and Then’ at the Grammys – their first win at the music awards for 28 years. The song was originally written and sung by John Lennon around 1977 as a solo demo but left was left unfinished. But 45 years on, Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Ringo Starr finished the ballad with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning, using overdubs and guitar tracks by George Harrison. The win at the awards on Sunday 2 February now brings their all-time Grammy award total to eight. The band’s biggest year at the Grammys was in 1997 when they won three awards – best music video, best pop duo/group performance for “Free as a Bird” and best music film for The Beatles Anthology. Now and Then is believed to be the “final” Beatles song released by all four members, making the song which has over 64million views on YouTube, even more special for fans of the Fab Four .The world-famous band released the song as a double A-side with the band’s 1962 debut single Love Me Do, and cover art by US artist Ed Ruscha. Now and Then was recorded by John Lennon at his home in New York.Following his death in 1980 aged 40, Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono handed the recording over to the remaining Beatles in 1994.During this period, Harrison, Sir Paul and Sir Ringo recorded new parts and completed a rough mix for Now And Then with producer and musician Jeff Lynne. However, the band did not release the song, citing issues separating Lennon’s vocals and the piano in a clear mix due to limited technology at the time. But in 2021, new artificial intelligence audio restoration technology allowed Peter Jackson and a team to isolate vocals and music, creating a new mix of the Revolver album, sourced directly from the four-track master tapes.Jackson and his sound team, led by Emile de la Rey, have now done this for Now And Then, which helped separate the vocal from the piano, with Sir Paul and Sir Ringo finishing the song in 2022..
