Kia Rookie Ladder: Paolo Banchero seems primed for some hardware – NBA.com

admin

imageThat’s all from us

Thanks for joining us today, we’ll be back tomorrow with all the latest from Manchester United’s takeover battle.

Reports of a real rung race here at the Kia Rookie Ladder, as Mark Twain might have said, were exaggerated.

Paolo Banchero’s status as the favorite to snag the NBA’s Kia Rookie of the Year Award isn’t dead at all.In fact, it’s looking and feeling rather chipper with five days left in the regular season.

Granted, Banchero’s grip on the top spot for nearly the entire season — on the strength of his fast start (22.7 points per game in his first 15 games), followed by East rookie honors in December, January and February — drained suspense from the award chase. But a thirst for something more competitive, a tighter award chase to add some intrigue when ballots are cast in the final days, has been wishful thinking, salted with a little recency bias.

The reality is that other Class of 2022 members such as the Indiana Pacers’ Bennedict Mathurin, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Jalen Williams, the Utah Jazz’s Walker Kessler and a couple more have been jockeying for second or third place and berths on the All-Rookie first team. The Ladder committee accounts for only one vote in the NBA’s official awards campaign, but it’s hard to imagine any of those rivals leap-frogging the Orlando Magic’s prized forward.

Consider the case for Williams, a valuable piece for OKC now and into the future based on his variety of skills.

Here is the post-All-Star split for the ever-improving wing from Santa Clara that has him breathing down Banchero’s neck: 19.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 4.3 apg, helping his team go 10-13 in that time.

Banchero’s numbers over the same time frame: 20.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 4.1 apg and a 10-10 stretch for the Magic. And in the two-thirds of the season prior to All-Star, Banchero easily was the more impactful player.

That’s not to suggest the Ladder has no sense of humor.Consider this humorous Tweet from a couple of weeks ago

from an OKC beat writer.(We’re dead-set against explaining punchlines here at HQ, but for context, that’s the Thunder’s Jaylin Williams, the No.

34 overall pick, reacting on Draft night to the team’s selection of Jalen Williams 22 spots earlier.)

And now, here’s a look at the top rookies this season with 12 days to go in 2022-23.

The Top 5 this week on the 2022-23 Kia Rookie Ladder:

(All stats through Tuesday, April 4)

1.Paolo Banchero, Orlando Magic

Season stats: 20.0 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 3.7 apg Since last Ladder: 21.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg, 4.3 apg Last Ladder: No.1 Draft pick: No.1 overall

Certainly, the big guy’s coach, Jamahl Mosley, is biased. But the suggestion that someone might ace out Banchero as ROY struck Mosley as way wrong.“It’s not a race,” the coach told reporters, before listing his reasons why.And ESPN.com’s Tim McMahon noted: “Every rookie who has averaged at least 19 points, six rebounds and three assists since the ABA-NBA merger has won Rookie of the Year.Banchero will join Luka Doncic, Blake Griffin, Grant Hill, Larry Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Walter Davis in that club.”

2.

Jalen Williams, Oklahoma City Thunder

https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1631114 14.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.3 apg Since last Ladder: 18.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 4.0 apg Last Ladder: No.2 Draft pick: No.

12 overall

How much has Thunder coach Mark Daigneault come to rely on Williams? So much so that he

wound up with a technical foul and had to burn a timeout Tuesday at Golden State when the referees didn’t properly permit the versatile rookie to sub in midway through the fourth quarter.OKC wound up losing by 11 but a one-possession game ballooned to a six-point Warriors lead with the error (acknowledged afterward in a pool report by crew chief Courtney Kirkland).

What a way to end the half!😳

3 Draft pick: No.22 overall

An inadvertent elbow to the head from teammate Talen Horton-Tucker Monday sent Kessler into concussion protocol, possibly clipping short his rookie season. His 20 double-doubles top all rookies, and he ranks fourth in the NBA in total blocks and blocks per game (2.3), and first in field-goal percentage (.720).As a starter: 11.5 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 2.7 bpg.

Against Miami on Tuesday, Ivey had his third game with at least 30 points and five assists. The last rookie to have more? Luka Doncic four years ago, when the Dallas guard did it six times.Ivey leads all rookies with 365 assists (Andrew Nembhard, 313) and he’s third in points (1,136).

That’s the most scored by a Pistons rookie since Grant Hill (1,394) 28 years ago. He’s also 10th in the NBA in turnovers (223) and ninth in fouls (231), signs of the force-feeding Detroit has done with him.

Mathurin hasn’t hit his 3s at a high rate — 5-of-18 over his last four games and 32% all season — but he did set a new Indiana record for most 3-pointers by a rookie. He has 97 now, passing Chris Duarte’s 94 from last season.

Though he has started in his past eight appearances, Mathurin still leads the league in points off the bench (1,028) and trips to the foul line by a bench player (353, more than 100 more than anyone else).

After months of speculation, the Glazers are finally set to

negotiate a price for Manchester United with the leading bidders.

Multiple bids have already been received, with

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani the two frontrunners.Yet the six Glazer siblings are split on sanctioning a full sale, with Joel and Avram happy to stay on board and seek new investment.

If the Glazers sell all of their shares, they want £6billion.Ratcliffe, Sheikh Jassim and others are reluctant to match that figure, as they await a response from Raine Group – the merchant bank acting on the Glazers’ behalf.

It remains to been how the saga will unfold.

Thanks for joining us today, we’ll be back tomorrow with all the latest from Manchester United’s takeover battle.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has revealed Alejandro Garnacho will return to fitness before the end of the season.

“We have something in our heads, but I don’t want – he will definitely be back before the end of the season,” Ten Hag said.

“I think he will be in the final stages, but I don’t want to bring so much pressure on the medical and Garnacho to set a date when to be back.”

The Etihad Stadium will be named as a host venue in the British and Irish bid for

Euro 2028 ahead of Old Trafford when details are confirmed next week.

Manchester United’s iconic stadium, which has the capacity to host 74,300 spectators, is the largest ground in the Premier League and has 21,000 more seats than Manchester City’s current home.

But the Etihad, which is set to have his capacity bumped up to 60,000 in the near future, is set to be given the green light ahead of Old Trafford when the bid’s

official list of 14 stadiums is chopped down to 10 in the coming days.

Aston Villa legend Gabriel Agbonlahor has slammed Antony for being a flop in his first season with Manchester United.

“When I watch Antony I look at his stats for starters. He’s played 16 Premier League games, three goals and zero assists,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“He’s got zero assists because of the way he plays.I’ve watched him all season, I watched him against Brentford and he gets the ball and knows he can’t beat the full-back on the outside, so he pretends to go on the outside, goes inside and gives it away.If you’re a striker then you’re frustrated.”

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that

Christian Eriksen will be in the the Manchester United squad to face Everton on Saturday.

The Danish midfielder has been ruled out with an ankle injury since United’s

FA Cup fourth round win over Reading at the end of January.Eriksen had been on the end of a poor challenge from former Liverpool star Andy Carroll.

It was

a tackle that left Ten Hag furious, and Eriksen on the sidelines for more than two months.

But he has finally been able to return to training and is in line to be part of the Red Devils’ squad which will host struggling Everton, with Ten Hag delighted to see him back.https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/man-utd-christian-eriksen-injury-29657884

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is facing a tough test at Everton on Saturday.

“We have to do it every game and that needs preparation and it has to be the standard when you are playing for Manchester United.

So this is the demand, no ifs or buts, you have to do it and that is the responsibility. That a player has to deliver when you are playing for Manchester United. So you have to be accountable,” he said.

“It’s about demands and so we have to match standards always. It is about a culture that you can only be a player for Manchester United when you match those standards. And you have to do it always.

“It’s not about once, because players when you are not absolutely top, they can do it once. But for a player who is playing in the top, so competing for trophies, competing for winning the Premier League you have to do it always.

So [consistency].”

In recent years,

Manchester United have been plagued by a lack of leadership and accountability as they slowly slipped down the domestic pecking order.

But the appointment of

Erik ten Hag in the summer has changed the club’s trajectory – and it certainly feels as though there is no longer a dearth of dressing room leaders at Old Trafford.

The nucleus of the dressing room that limped to the club’s

worst-ever finish in Premier League history have flourished under the Dutchman’s guidance and are firmly on track to re-establish a place in next season’s Champions League.Remarkably, they’ve done so without club captain Harry Maguire, who has spent the majority of the season on the bench after losing his spot in the team in the opening weeks of the campaign.https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/man-utd-erik-ten-hag-29656717 Manchester United have been fined £65,000 by the FA for surrounding the referee in the chaotic moments during the FA Cup win over Fulham last month.

Earlier this week, Fulham striker

Aleksandar Mitrovic was slapped with an eight-game ban after being charged with violent and improper conduct in the 3-1 win for United. He was shown a straight red card by Chris Kavanagh after he grabbed the referee by the arm while protesting the quick-fire sending-off of Willian and Marco Silva. There was chaos on the pitch at Old Trafford in the 71st minute when Willian handballed to stop Jadon Sancho’s shot from going in.The Fulham winger was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity before Mitrovic and Silva were also given their marching orders for protesting too vociferously.

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be handed a return to the dugout by Belgian giants Club Brugge.

Solskjaer has been out of work since November 2021, when he was dismissed by United with the club underperforming in the Premier League.

He has been biding his time since, though, as he closes in on 18 months outside management.

His spell out of the game could be set to come to an end soon, however, with Club Brugge reportedly considering him for their vacant managerial role. The reigning Belgian champions have already parted ways with two managers this season, with former Bournemouth boss Scott Parker lasting just a few months in the role.

The Glazers are expected to start negotiating a price with the leading contenders in the Manchester United takeover saga.

United’s owners put the club up for sale in November, with Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus leading the race.Other parties are interested in buying a minority stake.

As reported by The Telegraph, negotiations will now start in the coming days as interested parties attempt to find an agreement with the Glazers – who want at least £6bn to consider selling the Red Devils.

Manchester United continue to try and tie up the futures of several key men – including Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils received a boost this week when Luke Shaw penned an extension that will take his years of service to beyond a decade.Erik ten Hag will now turn his attention to retaining other members of his squad with Rashford, David de Gea and Fred among those whose contracts are winding down.

Rashford has enjoyed the best season of his career but, at 25, the player wants to make sure this deal reflects his importance and value as he heads into his peak years. There is strong interest from PSG, but United are keen not to force a decision out of the forward and are prepared to be patient.

Everton manager Sean Dyche will not be underestimating Manchester United’s Wout Weghorst on Saturday.

The Dutch striker has come in for a lot of criticism recently, but Dyche rates him.

“He’s a very good player,” Dyche said at his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.“He worked very hard, [he’s] very professional and different managers look for different things.”

Christian Eriksen allegedly snubbed a transfer to Manchester United because of the treatment Juan Mata received before Erik ten Hag arrived on the scene and managed to change the midfielder’s mind.

Denmark international Eriksen had been on Man United’s radar for quite some time prior to this summer when they snapped him up on a free transfer following a short spell at Brentford.

The Red Devils first registered an interest in the 31-year-old when he was plying his trade at Tottenham back in 2019 and set about trying to poach the midfielder then as his contract in north London was beginning to wind down.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/christian-eriksen-snubbed-man-utd-29654914

Erik ten Hag has revealed why Wout Weghorst was benched against Brentford on Wednesday night.

Speaking ahead of kick-off, he said: “Creativity [is the reason why].Jadon has made good progress since he came back.

You know he can play the final pass, he can make action one-on-one, he can move in behind and score a goal, so that’s the reason why.”

Gary Neville found himself trying to combat the reigning Ballon d’Or recipient and the World Cup winning captain en route to Manchester United’s treble success 24 years ago.

That 1999 triumph remains iconic – with the Red Devils still the only English side to ever complete the feat. Before their late, late show against Bayern Munich however they had to overcome Italian champions Juventus, the side who had made the previous three Champions League finals.

United would stop them making it four on the bounce, but the Old Lady pushed them all the way and provided such a test that Neville still purrs about the Bianconeri when quizzed now.Previously he’d declared them the best side he’d ever come up against.

The son of Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs has seen his hopes of landing a professional contract dampened after a trial with Sheffield United.

Young defender Zach is currently on trial with the Championship side as confirmed by Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom but their transfer embargo makes a switch to Bramall Lane complicated.

Manchester United have already made their first attempt to sign Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos.

According to Portuguese outlet

Record, the Red Devils made their first attempt to sign the striker a few weeks ago but saw an approach rejected. They remain interested however and could try again sooner rather than later.

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be handed a return to the dugout by Belgian giants Club Brugge.

Manchester United could welcome back both Luke Shaw and Christian Eriksen this weekend as they aim to take a step towards securing a top-four spot.

The Red Devils take on struggling Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon and have the opportunity to build a six-point buffer between themselves and Tottenham in fifth.Erik ten Hag’s men will also be aiming to make it back-to-back victories at home following their slender 1-0 success over Brentford last time out.

Despite that win, United were hit with a major blow during that game after left-back Shaw was withdrawn during the first period after holding his hamstring.

Speaking after the game, United boss Ten Hag said: “I can’t say in this moment [what the injury is].

“I have to wait for tomorrow, what the diagnosis is, I took him straight off, didn’t want to risk. But we have to wait what’s the outcome.”

Christian Eriksen explained what his rehab has entailed recently on the Manchester United club podcast.

“It’s going well.I’ve just started being outside, with football boots on,” he said.“Then we take it from there, that’s the next step.I’ve been in the gym for some weeks now and now it’s time to do the next rehab session outside.

“It’s weird not being on international duty, you’re normally away and now it’s more the thing you’re following your national team and you’re here instead of being with them. That’s weird, but it has happened before so you get used to it.But, still, you enjoy it less.”

Alexis Mac Allister is of interest to Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal with the player’s representatives preparing for talks over his future.

The Brighton star added a World Cup win to his CV in December as he helped Argentina triumph, which has seen his stock rise further.

The Seagulls have excelled this term as they threaten the top four with Mac Allister playing a key role in their impressive season.

As a result, the midfielder is on the radars of several top sides, who could be ready to test Brighton’s resolve. In recent years the south coast outfit, who’ve received plaudits for their recruitment, have parted with the likes of Ben White, Marc Cucurella and Leandro Trossard.

Manchester United have overtaken Arsenal as the most fined Premier League side this season, having paid out a whopping £202,000 to the Football Association.

United were slapped with a £65,000 fine on Thursday for surrounding the referee to appeal for a penalty in their chaotic 3-1 win over Fulham last month.Erik ten Hag’s side were punished after admitting a charge of failing to conduct themselves in an orderly fashion in the 71st minute of the game after Willian handballed to prevent Jadon Sancho’s shot from going in.

After United’s protests, Willian was shown the red card, while Aleksandar Mitrovic and manager Marco Silva were also dismissed in furious scenes.United have now also been punished for their part in the chaos.

Erik ten Hag has hit back at the critics of David de Gea after the Manchester United goalkeeper made a crucial save in the win over Brentford on Wednesday night.

“When you need David, he is there and when you lose focus, mistakes can happen,” he told BBC ’s Match of the Day.“We want to play as a machine and don’t make mistakes.

We make one mistake and luckily they didn’t benefit from it and also it was the performance from David de Gea.”

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright was previously among those to suggest that the Spanish stopper was among the Red Devils’ weak links.

Whilst questions regarding the club ownership continue to swirl, that has not stopped Ten Hag from putting together a summer transfer shortlist.

According to reports, the Dutchman wants to add two right-backs to his squad should Aaron Wan-Bissaka bid farewell to Old Trafford. It is suggested that Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard and Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries have both been shortlisted ahead of potential summer moves.

That could also lead to Diogo Dalot being sold on as the Portuguese approaches the final year of his Red Devils’ contract.

Marcel Sabitzer’s new Manchester United role in midweek impressed pundit Ian Wright but potentially paved the way for fresh problems at Old Trafford.

Austria midfielder Sabitzer joined on loan from Bayern Munich at the end of the January transfer window as cover for the injured Christian Eriksen. While Eriksen is closing in on a return to first-team action, the new arrival has been a regular fixture in matchday squads under Erik ten Hag.

Wednesday’s victory over Brentford saw the 29-year-old thrive in a less familiar number 10 role, potentially strengthening his case for a permanent move over the summer after hinting at a switch.

However, this could end up providing selection dilemmas for a manager who has regularly used Bruno Fernandes as the more advanced of his midfielders.

James Webb Space Telescope recently captured an image of Uranus, detailing the ice giant’s ring system, its brightest moons and its zestful atmosphere. The observation, made Feb.

6, comes on the heels of a similar photo the powerful telescope captured of the solar system’s other ice giant, Neptune.According to a news release from NASA, the new photograph of Uranus features “dramatic rings as well as bright features in the planet’s atmosphere.”

“The Webb data demonstrates the observatory’s unprecedented sensitivity for the faintest dusty rings, which have only ever been imaged by two other facilities: the Voyager 2 spacecraft as it flew past the planet in 1986, and the Keck Observatory with advanced adaptive optics,” NASA wrote in the Thursday release.

“Uranus has never looked better” the NASA Webb Telescope

tweeted from it’s social media account on Thursday.

New images from the James Webb Space Telescope look deep into universe

What is the James Webb Telescope?:

What to know about the NASA space camera and its dazzling images.

The world’s largest and most powerful space telescope has been capturing images of thousands of galaxies – some of which formed billions of years ago after the Big Bang and some of the faintest objects ever observed.

The telescope was designed to explore every phase of cosmic history, NASA says.

The seventh planet from Sun, Uranus is unique,

according to NASA.The planet rotates on its side, at roughly a 90-degree angle from the plane of its orbit. This causes extreme seasons since the planet’s poles experience many years of constant sunlight followed by an equal number of years of complete darkness.

The planet is characterized as an ice giant due to the chemical make-up of its interior, the

space agency said. Most of its mass is thought to be a hot, dense fluid of “icy materials – water, methane, and ammonia – above a small rocky core.”

Uranus has 13 known rings and 11 of them can been seen in the new photograph, NASA reported.

“Some of these rings are so bright with Webb that when they are close together, they appear to merge into a larger ring,” according to NASA.“Nine are classed as the main rings of the planet, and two are the fainter dusty rings (such as the diffuse zeta ring closest to the planet) that weren’t discovered until the 1986 flyby by Voyager 2.”

The powerful telescope also captured many of of Uranus’ 27 known moons, NASA wrote.

“It is just the tip of the iceberg of what Webb can do when observing this mysterious planet.”
