The co-founder and CEO of telemedicine startup iCliniq, Dhruv Suyamprakasam in an interview to Business Insider revealed his experience of moving to Bengaluru twice to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams, only to leave both times within two years. He cites a culture of bias as a major contributing factor to his departures.
“It wasn’t the right place for us…” Dhruv, eager to launch his startup, chose Bengaluru as his base, attracted by its reputation. However, he was later disappointed as the city proved challenging.
“It wasn’t the right place for us.Bengaluru encourages startups to grow fast and fail fast, but that kind of pressure doesn’t suit a healthcare startup, where trust and precision are critical. We met investors who had unrealistic expectations, like achieving 100 paid consultations daily,” Dhruv revealed.
Dhruv faced significant bias due to his lack of Hindi proficiency and not being an IIT alumnus.“I felt excluded because I didn’t speak Hindi, India’s most widely spoken language, and because I wasn’t an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, the country’s most prestigious engineering school.Being from a small town many hadn’t heard of added to the judgment,” he shared.
After facing challenges and feeling excluded in Bengaluru, Dhruv returned to his hometown of Coimbatore.
Despite the slower pace and limitations like unreliable internet, he found a more sustainable environment to grow his business.
Twice the charm, twice the disappointment In 2016, Dhruv made a second attempt to establish his business in Bengaluru. He hoped for a more inclusive environment and better opportunities for healthcare startups. However, the situation remained largely unchanged.
Disappointed, he returned to Coimbatore to continue building iCliniq.
