Elon Musk’s social media platform X is taking its private messaging to the next level. It is taking out this chat feature, X Chat, which is currently available in the main X platform – and has begun testing it as a standalone app for iPhones. This marks a shift in how X handles direct communication between users.“For the past few months, we’ve been quietly building a standalone X Chat app for iOS.Today we’re opening it to the first 1,000 users on TestFlight.Use it.Break it.We want your feedback.

X Chat is essentially an upgraded, standalone version of X’s existing direct messages feature.Rather than accessing private conversations through the main X app, users will be able to open a separate, dedicated app built entirely around messaging.According to a report by TechCrunch, early testers describe the experience as simpler and smoother than the current DM interface within X.Chats will sync across the X app and the chat.x.com web platform, which launched in December 2025.This means users will be able to pick up conversations across devices like WhatsApp.On Monday, X announced that the initial beta of X Chat was available to 1,000 users through Apple’s TestFlight testing platform. The beta slots filled up within just two hours of the announcement, the report said.
Boswell confirmed the beta will be expanded beyond the initial 1,000 users soon, though no specific date was given. What early testers are saying
According to a report, a handful of beta users have shared screenshots of the app.
The login screen features a starry background. While the current beta version does not yet include message requests, but Boswell confirmed that feature is actively being rebuilt.
For now, X Chat is only available to iPhone users in beta. However, xAI’s AI chatbot Grok confirmed on X that an Android version is expected “very soon.” About the Author TOI Tech Desk The TOI Tech Desk is a dedicated team of journalists committed to delivering the latest and most relevant news from the world of technology to readers of The Times of India.TOI Tech Desk’s news coverage spans a wide spectrum across gadget launches, gadget reviews, trends, in-depth analysis, exclusive reports and breaking stories that impact technology and the digital universe.Be it how-tos or the latest happenings in AI, cybersecurity, personal gadgets, platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and more; TOI Tech Desk brings the news with accuracy and authenticity.
