imageITV West Country saw the drones in action at Cinderford Wetlands – an area Severn Trent has found hard to access when fixing parts of the network.Water company Severn Trent has embraced the latest technology to improve its network – drones to spot leaks in its piping system.Bosses says the drones have saved the company “potentially hundreds of thousands” of pounds per year.Jonny Bevan, Drone Safety Officer said he believes the drones will help the company maintain areas of its network that are hard to access.Jonny said: “We’ve got lots of fields, lots of rural areas – using the drone we can suddenly cover fast amounts of areas that you just wouldn’t cover with a person.”The drones work by picking up leaks through thermal imaging – the imaging detects water leaking out at a different temperature from the surrounding ground.But any money saved by Severn Trent drone technology will not pass on to customer bills.Severn Trent want to increase customer’s bills by 46% over the next five years – money the company says will be spent on upgrading pipes, drains and sewers.Watch one of Severn Trent’s new drones explore a pipe in the company’s water network, checking it for leaks.Duncan Turner, drone lead, said such 3D imaging “allows us to explore that internal space (of the tunnel).As the drone goes through it maps it out and any photographs that we take it shows us exactly where on the model it has taken them.” The company has plans for unmanned patrol drones – “Drone in a Box.” These are drones that will live in a cage in remote areas, doing regular patrols along critical pipe work, and can be operated remotely.The new “Drone in a Box” hopes to offer a rapid response to leaks in the Severn Trent sites, Credit: Severn Trent.
