YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has unveiled the platform’s strategic roadmap for 2026 with an aim to solidify the Google-owned platform’s position as the “epicenter of culture” and the “new TV”.

YouTube CEO says that the era of dismissing creator content as mere “UGC” (User Generated Content) is over as creators are now purchasing professional studio lots and producing high-end series, such as Julian Shapiro-Barnum’s digital late-night show, Outside Tonight.
He also announced that the company will build on its status as the top streaming service by watchtime in the US, and YouTube TV will soon launch fully customisable multiview and over 10 specialised plans for sports, news and entertainment.Talking about Shorts, Mohan said that YouTube Shorts are averaging 200 billion daily views, and the platform will begin integrating new formats, such as image posts, directly into the Shorts feed.
YouTube to bring industry-first Parental Controls
Focusing on the next generation’s privacy and security, Mohan said YouTube is introducing more granular controls to help parents manage their children’s digital habits.In an industry-first move, parents will soon be able to set a “Shorts timer” to zero, which means disabling the scrolling feed for their kids and teens.YouTube also aims to simplify account switching for age-appropriate viewing.In-app shopping and brand deals soon on YouTube
According to Mohan, YouTube remains a massive economic engine and has contributed $55 billion to the US GDP in 2024 alone.

Last but not the least, AI is being positioned as a “tool for expression, not a replacement” but to tackle the “AI slop” – low-quality, repetitive content, YouTube is offering users to create Shorts using their own AI-generated likeness and even produce games through simple text prompts.
Meanwhile, YouTube is enhancing its spam-fighting algorithms to specifically target and reduce the spread of low-quality AI content.Moreover, the platform is expanding its Content ID system to help creators manage their likeness and is backing the NO FAKES Act to protect creative integrity.
