PS5 And Xbox Series X Shortages Will Continue Through 2023, Most Likely

We are not even close to arriving at a point where new generation consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X and S are going to be widely available, it seems.

While it’s very clear that this holiday is out the window, and these consoles will remain incredibly hard to find due to limited stock and instant sellouts (and scalping!), that is not changing any time soon thanks to a global component shortage that is not improving.

Toshiba has told Bloomberg that “the supply of chips will remain very tight until at least September next year” with “”some customers not being fully served until 2023.”

While many different industries use the chips and components that are in short supply, there is special acknowledgement of the gaming industry as one of the largest consumers:

“We consider which customer faces the most severe situation, such as the risk of the whole production line halting or the business getting obliterated without the supply of chips,” Toshiba director Takeshi Kamebuchi said.”Game console makers are among the customers making the strongest demands and I’m sincerely sorry for their frustration as none of them have a 100% satisfaction.”

The current situation has created a rather odd circumstance where both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are setting records, respectively, and yet they’re being hard limited by supply at the same time, so we don’t know how fast and how much they might have sold if supply was anywhere close to being able to meet demand.Microsoft has proclaimed that the Xbox Series X/S is the fastest selling Xbox launch of all time.Sony has said that the PS5 is the fastest-selling console…period, over this launch window. But again, these sales would have soared even higher without these component restrictions and shortages.

There really is not all that much to be done about this, and consumers will simply have to be patient. Some have theorized that Sony changing the PS5s heatsink in its newest model may open the console up for wider availability using different materials, albeit that doesn’t solve the chip problem.

The Best Baal Build, Artifacts And Polearms For Genshin Impact’s Update 2.1 Eventually, this will even out, and yet this will remain a strange launch era for both consoles unlike anything we’ve seen in the industry to date. When all is said and done it stands to reason that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S may be two of the top selling consoles for their respective companies, but we’re a long ways from seeing their max potential so long as supply remains painfully short of demand.

And we’ve got at least a year of this left, it seems.
