When players search for Manchester United on Football Manager 2022, they’ll have trouble finding the Red Devils on the game.
Sports Interactive’s latest Football Manager game, FM22 , will have a bunch of new features including a brand new data hub, innovative tactics and new player positions .Players who pre-ordered the game have been enjoying early access to the game, being able to access a beta version, with their save progress able to carry over when the game is officially released.
Football Manager 2022 will also be available to play on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, with the game enjoying a successful debut on console last year.FM22 and FM22 Xbox Edition will also be available with Xbox Game Pass from Day One when both titles launch.
But Manchester United will be absent from FM22 this year, in their official capacity anyway, following a trademark settlement between the club, Sports Interactive and Sega.
Instead, Manchester United have been renamed to ‘Manchester UFC’ or ‘Man UFC’ on Football Manager 2022.And here’s why.
United took legal action against Sega and Sports Interactive, the makers of the popular Football Manager video game series, in May 2020.
“SEGA and Sports Interactive maintain that they do not need a licence to use the ‘Manchester United’ name but have made the change as a gesture of goodwill so that both parties can move on.”
United argued that Sega and Sports Interactive infringed their trademark over the logo by not using the official Manchester United badge in the game, instead “replacing the club crest with a simplified red and white striped logo”.
The club claimed this “deprives the registered proprietor of its right to have the club crest licensed”.
Sega and Sports Interactive said that the use of the club’s name is “a legitimate reference to the Manchester United football team in a football context” and has been used in Football Manager and its predecessor Championship Manager since 1992 “without complaint by the claimant”.
But on August 6, 2021, Sports Interactive and Sega confirmed that both parties had agreed a settlement to amicably resolve their trademark dispute.
“Manchester United and Sega have agreed a settlement to amicably resolve their trademark dispute relating to Football Manager,” Said Sega via the @FootballManager
“Both parties are pleased to resolve this matter to their mutual satisfaction.”
A Sega spokesperson told Manchester Evening News that they have agreed to rename Manchester United on Football Manager games, starting with their upcoming release, FM22.
“From FM22 onwards, the Manchester United football club will be named ‘Manchester UFC’ or ‘Man UFC’,” A Sega Spokesperson told MEN Sport.
“These name changes have been made purely to settle the dispute on a no admissions basis.
