Chelsea vs Malmo – Champions League: Live score, team news and updates

imageThe clouds burst open and the goals poured, but the full implications of this Chelsea victory will only be clear until the injuries of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner can be properly assessed.Malmo were swept aside as they were expected to be, the Swedish champions simply outclassed and overwhelmed as Tuchel’s team steadied their Champions League campaign after the defeat at Juventus and recovered some of their attacking flair. Two goals in each half, including two penalties for Jorginho, delivered three points and they are second in Group H, three points behind Juventus after three games.Chelsea cruised to an easy victory over Malmo as they triumphed 4-0 in the Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge Jorginho (left) celebrates with Ben Chilwell after netting the second of his two penalty kicks in the second half The midfielder kept his cool to slot home either side of half-time in a game Chelsea always had total control in Tuchel’s reaction was muted at the final whistle and he tried to remain upbeat but he did reveal that he expects to be without his two senior strikers for ‘some matches’ starting on Saturday against Norwich.

Lukaku twisted an ankle in a poor tackle midway through the first half and Werner tweaked a hamstring moments before the interval.Kai Havertz came on and played as a false nine in the second half, flanked by Callum Hudson Odoi and Mason Mount and nothing could stop Chelsea’s serene progress to a comprehensive win.

It was on the cards from the moment Andreas Christiansen swept them into the lead in the ninth minute. But his first penalty kick came after a foul on Romelu Lukaku which left the Chelsea striker injured and down inside the box Chelsea’s medical team tried to treat the striker was he was unable to continue after trying to carry on for a few moments As soon as Jorginho netted his first penalty, Lukaku limped off the pitch where he was consoled by manager Thomas Tuchel Chelsea (3-4-2-1): Mendy 6; Christensen 7, Silva 6.5, Rudiger 6; Azpilicueta 6.5 (James 66, 6), Kante 7.5 (Saul 66, 6), Jorginho 7, Chilwell 7 (Alonso 66, 6); Mount 7, Werner 6 (Hudson-Odoi 44, 6.5); Lukaku 6.5 (Havertz 23, 7).Goals: Christensen 9, Jorginho 22, 57 (both pens), Havertz 48.Manager: Thomas Tuchel 7 Malmo (5-3-2): Dahlin 5 (Diawara 46, 5); Berget 5.5 (Moisander 5), Larsson 5, Nielsen 4, Brorsson 5, Olsson 5; Pena 5.5 (Rakip 58, 5), Innocent 5, Christiansen 5 (Nalic 58, 5); Colak 5, Birmancevic 4 (Abubakari 46, 5).

Bookings: Nielsen, Christiansen, Larsson.Manager: Jon Dahl Tomasson 5 Referee: Francois Letexier (FRA) 6.5 Att: 39,095 It was Christensen’s first goal on his 137th Chelsea appearance, and an accomplished finish on the run and on the volley from a cross by fellow centre-half Thiago Silva, and reward for an aggressive, high-tempo start by the Londoners.

Malmo had the look of Group H whipping boys before they arrived at Stamford Bridge, having lost to Juventus and Zenit St Petersburg. They have yet to score and have conceded 11 in three games, and they host Chelsea again in a fortnight. If the Swedes are to lose all six games, it will tighten any margin for error at the top of the group where three teams are fighting for two places and Tuchel’s side have no room to wriggle after the defeat by Juventus in Turin.Tuchel was hit by another blow late in the first half when Lukaku’s strike partner Timo Werner appeared to pull a hamstring The German forward was also forced to limp off around the pitch and down the tunnel to put a downer on the Blues’ night Chelsea enjoyed total domination over a hapless Malmo side as they eased to victory in west London – graphic by SofaScore Chelsea’s second came from the penalty spot.

Lukaku collected a pass from Werner and muscled his way into the penalty area, away from Lasse Nielsen, who reacted by cutting him down in an ugly challenge from behind. As they fell, Lukaku’s right ankle caught under the body weight of the Malmo centre-half and appeared to twist badly. He tried to continue after a lengthy spell of on-pitch treatment but as soon as Jorginho smashed the penalty kick past ‘keeper Johan Dahlin, Lukaku signalled to the bench to let them know he would have to come off.Chelsea were chasing their third when Werner was hurt, accelerating towards goal in the hope of picking up a rebound as Havertz unleashed a shot when he pulled up sharply and clutched the back of his left leg.

He knew immediately there was damage to the hamstring and he winced in pain as he hobbled down the tunnel.Werner had blown Chelsea’s first big opportunity after around five minutes when he allowed a cross to bounce off him But Andreas Christensen soon fired the Blues ahead in just the ninth minute with a well-taken first time strike Celebrating with Antonio Rudiger and Mason Mount, it was the Danish defender’s first goal for Chelsea in his 137th game Tuchel, on the eve of the game, had expressed his fears about the relentless fixture schedule and its impact on the mental and physical welfare of the players.Lukaku may have been the victim of a poor tackle but Werner’s muscle injury will reinforce his feelings. And, after selling Olivier Giroud to AC Milan, Tammy Abraham to Roma and with Michy Batshauyi on loan at Besiktas, these two injuries in a matter of minutes rendered them suddenly without a recognised centre forward.

Not that it mattered on this occasion. They are awash with talent and versatility.Havertz came on for Lukaku and Hudson-Odoi replaced Werner, and the pair linked up to make it 3-0 early in the second half.Jorginho celebrates with Chelsea team-mates after scoring their second goal as the Blues totally dominated the play Just after half-time Kai Havertz broke through on the counter attack to lift the ball over the keeper and make it 3-0 Havertz was assisted by fellow sub Callum Hudson-Odoi (right) as the duo celebrate the goal in front of Blues supporters Hudson-Odoi carried the ball deep into Malmo territory before releasing Havertz, who assumed the role of the false nine, and clipped a neat finish over Ismael Diawara, the substitute goalkeeper on at the interval, dived at his feet.

Jorginho added the fourth, another penalty after another foul from behind by Nielsen, this time on Antonio Rudiger, after quick feet and fabulous control in a crowded penalty area from Havertz. There was more than half an hour to play but Tuchel seized the opportunity to take off his regulars.

Chelsea coasted through with no more goals and, perhaps more importantly, no further injuries.Host commentator 90+1min: Mercy from the match official – just the two added minutes, 88min: Chelsea are in full ‘taking the pi…proverbial’ mode now as centre-back Antonio Rudiger takes over free-kick duties and blasts way, way off target. That’s his last go on them I suspect.87min: Chelsea with a free-kick 30 yards out after Havertz is the latest player hacked down. The gap in quality between these teams has been embarrassing at times.

6 – No Chelsea player has scored more times for the club under Thomas Tuchel in all competitions than Kai Havertz (6, level with Mount).Counterpart.84min: Jo Inge Berget is replaced by Niklas Moisander, and the fact he is coming on to play centre-back suggests to you everything Malmo are doing is about damage limitation.78min: Malmo have had 27 per cent of the ball in this match and that’s about 25 per cent more than I expected.Of course they were expected to get beaten tonight but for those of you who do want a European Super League, games like this are your perfect ammo for promoting one.

75min: Even Edouard Mendy is getting bored now.On the halfway line he collects the ball and Chelsea fans urge their keeper to shoot! He resists the urge.

72min: There are more goals in this for Chelsea if they want them and surely some of the fringe players in the Blues will fancy they have a point to prove.Stamford Bridge is your stage lads.I wouldn’t rule out another couple.

69min: Sub-standard opposition, rain chucking it down – you could forgive Chelsea fans for being a little quiet. They are still a loud bunch though, although it seems odd at these times that they are thinking about their rivals Spurs as ‘Stand up if you hate Tottenham’ bellows around Stamford Bridge. The saying ‘rent free’ comes to mind.66min: Chelsea make a triple change to rest a few legs as N’Golo Kane, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Ben Chilwell are replaced by Saul Niguez, Reece James and Marcos Alonso That is a lovely finish from Kai Havertz 👌

Chelsea’s two first-half subs combine to score a swift counter-attacking goal! 🤝 58min: Not that the visitors really have much going for them as Sergio Pena and Christiansen are replaced by Erdal Rakip and Adi Nalic.57min: This time there is a skip from Jorginho , but it is the same result as he slots home the penalty down the centre.

56min : No doubts about this spot-kick either as Eric Larsson clumsily bundles over Antonio Rudiger and is booked.54min: Still Chelsea come forward as Anders Christiansen is booked for hacking down N’Golo Kante in the driving rain.48min: And Diawara’s first action is to pick the ball out of his goal. The subs combine for Chelsea as on the counter attack, as Callum Hudson-Odoi plays a forward pass on to the overlapping Kai Havertz who lofts a simple finish over the keeper.Curiously their best player in Johan Dahlin has gone off, and that surely must be an injury after his excellent first half as he is replaced by Ishmael Diawara.Malik Abubakari replaces Veljko Birmancevic up top.

Quite a notable scoreline at Old Trafford there – a game you can follow more on here .44min: Opportunity knocks for someone though and that someone is Callum Hudson-Odoi who comes on to lead the line as three minutes are added on at Stamford Bridge where the rain is now chucking it down.43min: Chelsea have a big problem. Not tonight, this game is done and dusted but now Timo Werner has pulled up with what looks like a hamstring problem – and you don’t run those off, you limp gingerly around the perimeter of the pitch and down the tunnel instead which is what the German has done. Both of Tuchel’s starting forwards have gone off injured.41min: Johan Dahlin is keeping this respectful for Malmo as now he does well to tip wide Havertz’s near post strike. He only has one goal for Chelsea in Europe although that was the winner in the Champions League final, so he tends to save it for the big moments.

39min: Malmo are under constant pressure and now are under rainfall too. It’s drizzling at Stamford Bridge but judging by this first half, it could soon be raining goals. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a Champions League game this one sided.

33min: This is a glorified practice match.Havertz is minorly offside as he is released in on goal but he doesn’t know this at the time and one-on-one he forces a good save from the Malmo keeper who reaches high to his near post to push the ball over.

32min: Chilwell again! That’s his third chance of the game.N’Golo Kante cuts the ball back for the left-back but his low drive is straight at the keeper.

29min: Half-chance for the hosts.Havertz gets involved with a ball to the back post, where Chilwell with an unorthodox volley loops the ball just off target.

26min: I guess counts as a Malmo attack? A long ball finds a forward in the box but under pressure they fire way, way off target.Edouard Mendy was never worried – put it that way.23min: Lukaku is still limping though and before play resumes, he is brought off to be replaced by Kai Havertz, with the crowd applauding him.21min: No hop, skip and jump from Jorginho , but he still scores his penalty with ease as the Blues double their lead.20min: Great work from Lukaku sees him power into the box before he is hauled down by Lasse Nielsen who is booked. The striker though looks like he may have picked up a knock and I don’t think he will continue.

14min: One way traffic.Chelsea win a free-kick on the edge of the box but Mason Mount can only turn the deadball over the bar.12min: By the way that is Christensen’s first goal for the Blues at his 137th attempt. You wouldn’t have guessed it by the excellent finish.9min: And there it is.Chelsea keep alive an attack following a corner and two centre-backs combine as Thiago Silva crosses for Andreas Christensen to fire in an unorthodox volley.

Werner should be taking notes here.8min: Still, you do think a Chelsea goal is coming.Romelu Lukaku scuffs a shot on the edge of the box, but it hits a Malmo player on the shoulder before the keeper tips the ball over.5min: The offside flag had gone up, and VAR would certainly have been interested but the real talking point is this is a DREADFUL miss.

Romelu Lukaku is released down the right, and it is he who is questionably offside, before he squares for Timo Werner in the mixer.Four yards out though and the German somehow allows the ball to bounce off his heel and go wide.£53million or not I’d back anybody who has kicked a ball before to finish that.3min: Chelsea are quickly on the front foot, with Ben Chilwell nodding just off target following a cross.

Chelsea: Mendy, Christensen, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Kante, Jorginho, Mount, Chilwell, Lukaku, Werner.

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Alonso, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, Bettinelli, Chalobah, Saul, Barkley, Hudson-Odoi, Ziyech, James, Havertz.Malmo: Dahlin, Larsson, Nielsen, Brorsson, Berget, Pena, Innocent, Christiansen, Olsson, Colak, Birmancevic.

Subs: Ellborg, Moisander, Rakip, Malik, Gwargis, Nalic, Eile, Diawara, Bjorkqvist, Lindman.Referee: Francois Letexier (France) Still early days in the group, but Chelsea don’t want another slip up tonight following defeat by Juventus. It could leave them in a bit of a concerning position at the halfway point.

A routine victory though would ease a few nerves or two.Out come the players at Stamford Bridge.’It’s important to start and finish strong. We must play our game in the oppostition’s half and bring an energy we are used to playing in the Premier League and the Champions League. We can gain confidence from there.Lukaku and Werner can play together.Timo can use Romelu as a reference. We need guys in the box.

Mason Mount can be useful there too.’ The national league in Sweden runs from April to December and right now, Malmo are involved in one incredible title fight.Just seven games to go and only two points separate Malmo at the top from three chasing teams behind them. Not heard of Malmo before? While they are not exactly expected to put up too much resistance against Chelsea, neither are they ‘backwaters of Europe’.There is rich historty with the Swedish champions and you can read more here.

So why is Lukaku struggling? It’s feast or famine stuff it seems with the Belgian who had scored four in his first four Blues matches.Somehow even with a mask on I am 95 per cent sure there is a beaming smile on Mason Mount’s face, while Romelu Lukaku will be looking to end his goal drought this evening which now stands at six games for the Blues.A Champions League trophy coloured jacket reminding fellow and rival fans of who are the current European champions is not for everyone, but we’ve seen A LOT worse at football grounds haven’t we? There’s a song in there too – something like ‘ you’ll never wear that…’ you know the rest.OF course though your usual scarves are doing the rounds, good to see Frank Lampard is still hanging around.Antionio Rudiger was expected to miss tonight’s game with a back injury but he is instead one of four big hitters coming back into the team following the 1-0 win over Brentford.

The centre-back is rejoined in the starting line-up by Thiago Silva, Jorginho and Mason Mount as Trevor Chalobah, Malang Sarr, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek drop out of the team.Mendy, Rudiger, Christensen, Silva, Chilwell, Azpilicueta, Kante, Jorginho, Mount, Lukaku, Werner.

It’s already been a busy evening and it’s half-time in a couple of early kick-offs with Barcelona 1-0 up over Dynamo Kiev thanks to a Gerard Pique effort – you can follow that action in more depth here .Manchester United are also in action this evening against Atalanta, and once again we have a separate live blog on that game you can track here .It was a rather fortunate win over Brentford at the weekend, and having lost at Juventus in the Champions League last time out – Chelsea could do with some feel good factor being put back into life at Stamford Bridge. So, will Malmo roll over and have their bellies tickled? Or are they going to become the latest side to put a challenge to the Blues.

Good evening all and welcome to our live coverage of Chelsea vs Malmo..
